Located in the heart of Aotearoa’s North Island, Wairakei Estate is home to a diverse collective of land uses and natural resources. Wairakei Estate are on a pursuit to become world leaders in sustainably managing a diverse collection of natural resources.
When approached by Taupo client Wairakei Estate to revamp their online home, we were excited at the prospect to work with a local organisation who are so committed to their commnity and environment. Replacing an old and underperforming website, the mission was to capture the essence of Wairakei Estate and tell the story of its people, environment and industry-leading initiatives.
Designed with the local community and media in mind, the site’s key objective was presenting complex information with clarity. The public’s understanding of Wairakei Estate was vague as its previous online presence was impersonal and overcomplicated.

A bespoke build on the Webflow platform, authentic and understated, the natural feel of the design is a nod to Wairakei’s commitment to environmentally-driven land use. Rugged illustrations are paired with statistics and bite-sized facts. This acts as an opportunity to punctuate spaces with important information while simultaneously highlighting Wairakei’s flora and fauna. Landscape and wildlife photography and video aid in visual story-telling.
A highlight is the interactive map, which takes the vast footprint of Wairakei Estate and translates it into a feature for visitors to engage with. It includes custom illustrations pinpointing notable landmarks and integration of simple interactions that bring the design to life.
Ella and Paul were terrific to deal with which is reflected in our new website. From day one when they visited the Estate they wanted to invest their time to truly understand our business to ensure they captured all the important dynamics that needed to be reflected in our website.
